![]() ![]() We stayed in Eureka, CA for a long weekend and drove about 50 minutes north to reach Fern Canyon. This year, we brought our two sons (11 & 13 years old) along to explore the magic of this location. We went for the first time in March 2022, just the two of us. It wasn't deep, but definitely enough that your shoes will get quite wet. If you go earlier than that in the year, definitely bring shoes you can get wet even in a drought year. We went the week before Memorial Day and the wooden footbridges had just been set out. We walked out and back in the Canyon (instead of looping.) We had it almost to ourself in our walk out, but definitely saw that it was starting to fill up as we were heading back. I definitely recommend going earlier in the day if you want it to be a bit less busy. We probably could've gotten through, but we were happy to get in a bit of extra walking. They had recommended 4WD or bigger vehicles. However, we did park and then walk the 1 or 2 miles to get to the Canyon. We had a little honda fit and had no issue with this road. We were told by the gift store employee (there was no ranger in the visitor center at Prairie Creek State Park) that the road out to Gold Bluffs beach had recently been graded so it was in good condition. It's been very dry this year but still impressively green. Loved this canyon and can't even imagine how beautiful it is in winter after it's been raining a lot.
